How is a dental crown prepared?

Your dentist will prepare your tooth to be ideal shape and size for the dental crown. The teeth usually prepare by removing it’s outer surface, and leaving a strong inner core. When the tooth is shaped and prepare, the dentist will take an impression (mold) of the prepared tooth, one of the other jaw, and another to mark the way you bite together. Once a a mold is taken, a temporary crown is placed and you can leave. The mold (impressions) is then sent to a dental laboratory where the dental technician constructed a model from the mold, along with details of the shade to use and other information needed for the crown to be made. A crown is created on the model to replace the missing tooth structure and send to your dentist. Later you return to the dental office, the temporary crown is removed and the final dental crown is fitted and cemented in place.

A crown may be indirectly fabricated utilizing technology and techniques relating to CAD/CAM dentistry, after the tooth is prepared using computer software virtual restoration is created which is milled on the spot and bonded permanently in place about an hour later.
