Canada’s new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is now available to millions of Canadians — and many patients don’t realize they may already qualify. If you’re wondering whether your dental visits at Diamond Dental Clinics can be covered under the plan, this guide breaks it down clearly.
What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The CDCP is a federal government program introduced to help low- and middle-income Canadians afford dental care. It is administered by Sun Life on behalf of Health Canada and provides direct payment to participating dental providers — including Diamond Dental Clinics.
Who Is Eligible?
You may qualify for the CDCP if you meet all of the following criteria:
- You are a Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number
- You filed a tax return for the previous year
- You do not have access to private dental insurance
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000 per year
Coverage is income-scaled: families earning under $70,000 receive 100% coverage for eligible services, while those earning between $70,000–$79,999 receive 60%, and those between $80,000–$89,999 receive 40%.
What Does the CDCP Cover?
The plan covers a broad range of preventive and restorative dental services, including:
- Oral exams and x-rays — diagnostic services to assess your oral health
- Cleanings and scaling — preventive care to remove plaque and tartar buildup
- Fillings — treatment for cavities in both adult and baby teeth
- Extractions — removal of damaged or problematic teeth
- Root canals — on eligible teeth
- Dentures and partial dentures — for eligible patients who have lost teeth
- Some oral surgery — depending on medical necessity
What Is NOT Covered by the CDCP?
It’s important to know the plan’s limitations. The following services are not covered:
- Cosmetic dental procedures (teeth whitening, veneers)
- Orthodontic treatment for adults (Invisalign, braces)
- Dental implants (not yet covered under the current plan)
- Services your dentist considers not medically necessary

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to show anything at my appointment?
Yes — bring your CDCP member ID (from your Sun Life welcome package) and a piece of government-issued ID.
Can children and seniors use the CDCP?
Yes. The CDCP covers eligible Canadians of all ages, including children and seniors, provided the household income and insurance requirements are met.
What if my treatment costs more than what the CDCP covers?
We will always discuss your treatment plan and any out-of-pocket costs before beginning any work. There are no surprise charges.
Is Invisalign or teeth whitening covered?
No — the CDCP does not cover cosmetic or orthodontic procedures. It focuses on essential dental care.
