You’ve just finished your dental appointment — great work taking care of your smile. But what happens next matters just as much as the procedure itself. Whether you’ve had a tooth pulled, a root canal, new fillings, or dental implant surgery, the first 24–72 hours of aftercare make a real difference in how quickly you heal and how comfortable you feel.
This guide covers aftercare for the most common dental procedures we perform at Diamond Dental Clinics. Bookmark it for reference — or share it with a family member who just had work done.
After a Tooth Extraction
First 24 hours
- Bite gently on the gauze pad your dentist placed for 30–45 minutes. Replace it if bleeding continues.
- Do not rinse, spit forcefully, use a straw, or smoke — these actions can dislodge the blood clot (which leads to painful “dry socket”).
- Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 15-minute intervals to manage swelling.
- Take any prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
- Rest and keep your head elevated, even while sleeping.
What to eat
Stick to soft, cool foods: yogurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, applesauce, and soup (not too hot). Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods for at least 3–5 days.
When to call us
Call Diamond Dental if you experience severe pain that worsens after day 2, heavy bleeding that won’t stop, signs of infection (fever, increasing swelling, bad odour), or a throbbing, empty feeling in the socket (dry socket).
After a Root Canal
- Your mouth will be numb for 2–4 hours. Avoid eating until the numbness wears off so you don’t accidentally bite your cheek or tongue.
- Some tenderness and sensitivity around the treated tooth is completely normal for 2–3 days.
- Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed to manage discomfort.
- Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until your dentist places the permanent crown.
What to eat
Soft foods are your friend: pasta, rice, eggs, fish, bananas, and yogurt. Avoid very hot or very cold foods, hard foods (like nuts or raw carrots), and sticky foods (like gum or caramel) until the crown is placed.
Don’t skip the crown
A root canal-treated tooth is fragile without a crown. Please schedule your crown appointment as soon as possible to protect your tooth.
After a Dental Filling
- Wait until the local anaesthetic fully wears off before eating (usually 1–3 hours).
- You may experience mild sensitivity to hot, cold, and pressure for a few days — this is normal.
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods for 24 hours.
- If your bite feels “off” after the filling, call us — it takes just a few seconds to adjust.
After Dental Implant Surgery
First week
- Expect swelling, bruising, and some bleeding — this peaks around day 2–3.
- Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 off) for the first 24 hours.
- Eat only soft foods: soup, smoothies, mashed vegetables, soft fish, eggs.
- Do not smoke — smoking significantly increases implant failure risk.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water starting 24 hours after surgery.
- Take all prescribed medications as directed.
Long-term care
Brush and floss around your implant daily, and use an interdental brush or water flosser if recommended. Attend your regular hygiene appointments — healthy gums keep your implant stable for decades.
After Teeth Whitening
The “White Diet” — 48 hours after whitening
Stick to white or light-coloured foods and drinks: water, milk, white rice, chicken, fish, bananas, and plain yogurt. Avoid: coffee, tea, red wine, tomato sauce, berries, coloured juices, soy sauce, and curry.
After a Dental Cleaning
- If you had a deeper cleaning for gum disease, expect some soreness for 2–5 days. Warm salt water rinses help.
- Avoid very hot or very cold foods for 24 hours if your teeth feel sensitive.
- If fluoride was applied, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
After Porcelain Veneers or Crowns
- Temporary restorations are not as strong as permanent ones — avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods.
- If the temporary comes off, call us promptly.
- After permanent placement: some sensitivity for a few days is normal. Avoid biting your nails, chewing ice, or opening packages with your teeth — these habits can chip porcelain.
General Tips for Any Dental Procedure
- Stay hydrated — water supports healing and keeps your mouth clean.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, especially if you were sedated.
- Don’t smoke — smoking dramatically slows healing for any oral procedure.
- Rest — especially after surgical procedures.
- Follow up — always attend scheduled follow-up appointments, even if you feel fine.
